It’s been a taboo subject for decades, but with its recent legalization of cannabis in Canada, the stigma is slowly fading away. Unfortunately, in its place is a lot of confusion. So, what is the difference between hemp and marijuana? Do hemp seed ingredients contain CBD or THC? Can hemp seeds get you high? We’re here to help you weed through the confusion (and we promise that will be the last of the puns).
What’s the difference between hemp seeds, hemp extract, and marijuana?
Hemp Seed Grain:
Hemp seeds are sourced from the seed of the hemp plant. The hemp seed grain is often used to create oils, protein powders, or they can simply be hulled to use as an ingredient itself (often called “hemp hearts” in grocery stores). The hemp plant has very low levels of THC and a poor CBD yield because the pollination of the plant that produces the grain reduces cannabinoid production. Hemp seeds, while they do not contain notable levels of CBD or THC, do contain all 9 essential amino acids, is rich in healthy fats, fibre, folic acid, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc.
Hemp extract is sourced from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant, also referred to as the bud. Hemp extract is high in CBD but low in THC. CBD is one of the big trends of 2019 as edibles will be legalized in Canada in October, allowing it to be infused into food and beverage products.
Marijuana, unlike Hemp, has high levels of THC, and is predominantly used for medical and recreational purposes. It is usually grown indoors, unlike hemp, and is not grown for food purposes.
THC vs. CBD
THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the cannabinoid that is primarily responsible for the psychoactive and intoxicating effects of cannabis. THC reacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is made up of Cannabinoid Receptors (present in almost every region of the central nervous system) and Cannabinoids (which the body naturally produces).
CBD, or cannabidiol, has little to no intoxicating effects. CBD is extracted from hemp. Studies on CBD are ongoing, but it is thought that CBD helps the body increase or improve the production of the body’s naturally occurring endocannabinoids.
Hemp seeds and hemp seed ingredients (hemp seed oil, hemp protein powder, etc.), have very low levels of both THC and CBD and are carefully tested to ensure the quality and safety of the product.
